Travel to the wedding & around the Douro Valley

Travel from Porto to the wedding venue

We are staying in Porto for the first 2-3 days, we will travel to the Douro Valley (1h30 mins drive from Porto) where the wedding venue is located.

Below are all the options to travel to the Douro Valley; easiest options being the pre-booked taxi or train. Let us know what you prefer, and we can bulk book the taxi and/or train.

Quick & Easy

Pre-Booked Taxi : We have previously used the travel agency called Douro Travel.

By Uber (approx 80 euros): Uber is available from Porto (but NOT from/around the Douro Valley, around the Douro we use Douro Travel).

Rent a Car: You can rent a car at the airport. It is the easiest way to explore the Douro Valley. Please note that once you arrive in the Douro Valley, some roads are very narrow and you will need a toll pass so please research before you decide to rent to avoid administrative burdens.

You may also decide this is not the best option for visiting all the vineyards :)

The Scenic Route

By Train (2-3hours) (approx 12 euros): This is a good website to plan your trip. It is a beautiful scenic route along the Douro River but please keep in mind trains are old and sometimes unreliable, so allow time. Nothing goes very fast in Portugal! Grab a picnic (or bifana sandwich!) and enjoy the ride. The nearest train station to our wedding venue is Regua where you will need to pre-book a taxi or use the taxi rank outside the station for the rest of your journey.

By Boat (almost 1day!): You can take a day cruise (approx. 7 hours) from Porto to a port in the Douro Valley (Regua is the closest). Here is an example of a day cruise.

Getting Around the Douro

There is not a great public transport system in the Douro Valley therefore you will either need to book a taxi (Douro Travel) or rent a car in Porto to explore the area.

There is a (rustic) train that runs all the way from Porto through Peso da Regua (the nearest station to the wedding venue), further up the Douro Valley to Pinhao (where we are doing a pre-wedding boat trip) and then up to Spain if you are up for an adventure!

Please note there is NO UBER in the Douro Valley only in Porto.
